Answer Engine Optimization: Getting Your Brand Cited by AI Assistants
Search is turning into answers. A practical guide to AEO — making your content the source that ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews quote.
Search is becoming answers
A growing share of discovery now happens inside AI assistants and AI-augmented search: people ask a question and get a synthesized answer with a handful of cited sources, instead of a page of links. If your content is not one of those sources, you are invisible in that conversation — no matter how well you rank in classic search.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of earning those citations: making your pages easy for AI crawlers to read, easy for models to extract facts from, and trustworthy enough to quote.
What AEO actually involves
Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so the first requirement is unglamorous: your content must be present in the server-rendered HTML. Loader-gated, client-only pages are effectively blank to answer engines.
On top of that foundation sit structured data (JSON-LD describing your organization, products, articles, and FAQs), question-shaped content that mirrors how people actually phrase queries, and consistency — the same facts about your brand stated the same way across your site, so a model can attribute them with confidence.
Newer conventions help too: an llms.txt index gives AI systems a curated map of your key pages, and an explicit robots policy that welcomes AI crawlers avoids accidental blocks.
SEO and AEO are complements, not rivals
Technical SEO — fast pages, clean metadata, sitemaps, crawlability — remains the foundation; answer engines lean on the same signals search engines do. What changes is the target: SEO optimizes for a click from a ranked list, while AEO optimizes for being quoted in the answer itself.
In practice that shifts content strategy toward direct, self-contained answers: a paragraph that fully resolves one question is more quotable than a sprawling page that touches ten.
A practical starting checklist
Check what an AI crawler sees: fetch your key pages with JavaScript disabled and confirm the content is in the HTML. Add FAQ sections that answer the questions your buyers actually ask, and mark them up with FAQPage structured data.
Describe your organization and offerings in JSON-LD, publish an llms.txt, and keep every claim honest — answer engines increasingly cross-check facts, and fabricated ratings or inflated numbers are a fast way to lose citability.
Then treat it like any other channel: pick the questions you want to be the answer to, publish the best answer on the internet for each, and measure whether assistants start citing you.
