SEO and AEO Are Not the Same Job
They share tooling and get sold together, but they optimise for different outcomes — a click versus a citation. Treating them as one job is why teams rank well and still go unmentioned.

The outcome is different, so the work is different
Search engine optimisation competes for a click. The page has to rank, and then it has to be the one someone chooses from a list of ten options.
Answer engine optimisation competes to be the source quoted inside an answer the user never leaves. There is no list and often no click — the win is being the passage the model reproduces.
That single difference cascades. Ranking rewards being competitive on a query; being cited rewards being the clearest, most extractable statement of a fact. Those are related but they are not the same target, and optimising only for the first is why teams with good rankings still find themselves absent from AI answers.
What carries over
Most of the technical foundation is shared. Crawlability, clean information architecture, fast pages, sensible internal linking and accurate structured data serve both — an answer engine cannot cite what it cannot fetch and parse.
Topical depth carries over too. A site with one thin page on a subject is a weak candidate for ranking and a weak candidate for citation.
If the SEO fundamentals are missing, start there. AEO is not a way around them.
What does not carry over
Keyword targeting has much less purchase. Answer engines resolve intent rather than match strings, so writing around a phrase gains little; answering the underlying question plainly gains a lot.
Page-level competition changes shape. In search you compete page against page; in an answer you may be one of three sources blended into a paragraph, which means a partial, well-stated contribution can win where a comprehensive but hedged page does not.
And content that only executes JavaScript is invisible. Most AI crawlers do not run it — a page that renders its substance client-side simply is not in the corpus, however well it ranks after a browser has done the work.
Writing to be quoted
Lead with the answer. A passage that states the conclusion in its first sentence is far easier to extract than one that arrives at it in the fourth paragraph.
Make claims self-contained. A sentence that depends on the two before it to make sense is a poor candidate for lifting into an answer.
Be specific and be honest about uncertainty. Where a term is contested or a practice is emerging, saying so is more likely to be reproduced accurately than an over-confident claim a model has reason to distrust.
Keep definitions and comparisons in plain prose rather than only in a graphic. An image of a comparison table cannot be quoted.
Measuring it is genuinely harder
Rankings and clicks are measurable. Citations largely are not — there is no console reporting how often an assistant used your page, and a cited answer often produces no referral at all.
The workable proxies are direct: ask the assistants the questions you want to own and record whether you appear, repeat on a cadence, and watch for the shift in how people arrive already informed.
Anyone selling a precise AEO score is overstating what is currently observable. Treat the measurement as directional and spend the effort on the content instead.
